The first book of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R Tolkein, this book follows the tale of Frodo Baggins of Bag End and the Ring entrusted to him by Bilbo Baggins, his adoptor. The story begins with Bilbo’s 111th birthday, or eleventeenth birthday as described in the book, and his disappearance thereof. Bilbo, who had some years before went on a mysterious adventure, was in good shape of one so old or “well-preserved”. During his birthday speech, to the surprise of many, he simply disappeared. Frodo, however, sees Bilbo’s trick as he himself had helped devised it. For, as it so happens, Bilbo is leaving Bag End and Hobbiton for adventure and wanted one last joke before he left. Afterwards, Gandalf the Grey, a wizard, consults with Bilbo about the Ring, which he believes should be left among other things to Frodo. Many years pass, much to my confusion as a reader, and Gandalf returns with daunting news. Frodo’s Ring is really an evil Ring crafted by the Dark Lord Sauron, and that Sauron will soon come looking for it. Frodo makes preparations to leave with his servant/gardener Sam Gamgee and friends Meriadoc (Merry) Brandybuck and Perigrin (Pippin) Took. They set out at once and learn that they are being pursued by Black Riders. They reach the edge of The Shire, their homeland, and set out into a mysterious wood. They are soon captured by a conniving old willow tree who swallows Merry and Pippin whole. They are saved whenst a small singing old man with a yellow hat comes bouncing by. Upon seeing the trapped hobbit’s feet protruding from the willow, he puts his face flush with the bark and sings a condescending song bidding that “Old Man Willow” let them go. Merry and Pippin are spat out immediately and the man, Tom Bombadil takes them to his home. They meet his wife Goldberry, a maiden of equal singing ability. It is revealed that Bombadil is apparantly one of the oldest beings alive in Middle Earth and the commander of the wood. After some time, the Hobbits are set off once again only to be separated in a fog. Upon waking, Frodo finds himself and his friends trapped in a cairn and about to be eaten by monsters. Frodo slips from his bonds and takes up a sword lying by one of his friends and lops off the creature’s hand. Thereupon Frodo sings out to Tom Bombadil that he might come save them. Bombadil immediately appears and smashes their stone prison. Upon seeing the dangers they are unprepared for, Bombadil rides with them to Bree, a small town on the other side of the Wood. In Bree, the Hobbits meet at an inn to rest. Frodo goes to meet the mysterious Strider, a man of the West. As he speaks with Strider, Merry and Pippin start drinking and singing. Frodo joins in the singing, but to his confusion, he slips on the Ring and becomes invisible. The Strider sweeps them up into their room before the townsfolk attack them for their strangeness. That night, the Black Riders return and tear up the inn looking for them. The Strider hides them and later reveals that he is an old friend of Gandalf’s The Strider offers to be their guide on their journey and Frodo takes him up on this and they set out. They eventually, after days and days of wandering, come to a roadside where they meet an Elf of the house of Elrond in Rivendell. Unfortunately, the Riders appear behind them and attack, wounding Frodo. Frodo makes it across the river to Rivendell on the back of a horse and the Riders follow quickly after him. As Frodo passes out from the pain of his wound, he sees the River rise up in the form of a stampede of White Riders and horses. The Hobbits spend many days in Rivendell while Frodo recovers. Upon waking up, Frodo reunites with Sam, Merry, Pippin, Strider, and Gandalf. A feast is held in the honour of the Ring-Bearer Frodo. Bilbo, surprisingly, has been at the house of Elrond for this whole time he has been gone. He and Frodo catch up and it is learned that the Strider is Aragorn son of Arathorn and true heir to the Ring. The next morning, Elrond holds a meeting represented by most all major races and parties in Middle Earth, Gimli the Dwarf, son of Gloin who Bilbo first adventured with, Legolas Greenleaf of the Mirkwood Elves, Gandalf the Grey of the Wizard Counsel, Frodo and Bilbo Baggins of the Hobbits, Aragorn the Man of the West, Boromir a Man of the West, and of course Elrond to preside over the meeting. They decide after much debate that a Company of Nine be made to deliver the Ring to Mount Doom to destroy it. Gandalf, Frodo, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Boromir are initially chosen by Elrond to serve this purpose. Sam Gamgee, however uninvited, begs Elrond to let him go with Frodo. After much thought, Elrond too gives leave of Merry and Pippin to go with the Company. The Company then sets out for many days of rather uneventful trekking through the wild to the Mountains of the South. Upon failing to climb the mountains and being pursued by wolves, they choose to go through the Mines of Moria, an abandoned and orc-infested Dwarf mine. They enter and, following the light of Gandalf’s staff, they head through the caves. The Company are waylayed by orcs in the tomb of Gimli’s friend found deep in the mines. Frodo is stabbed fiercely by an orc in the chest, and had it not been for the coat of mail given to him by Bilbo, he would have been skewered. They fought their way through the orcs and to the exit, which lay across a thin bridge over an endless abyss. They charge across and are nearly there when a massive flaming shadow, a Balrog known as Durin’s Bane, stops them. Gandalf defiantly issued his famous command, “You shall not pass!” and slams his staff down on the bridge defiantly. The bridge before him cracked and the Balrog fell through the chasm, but not before catching Gandalf with his whip. The Company, now of Eight, escaped the Mines and Aragorn took charge and led them to Lothlorien, a golden wood inhabited by Elves and the mysterious Lady Galadhriel. After many weeks spent in Lothlorien, the Company is each given gifts, to Merry and Pippin, a belt for their small swords, to Frodo, a phial of light emitting starlight, to Sam, a box of earth from the Lady’s orchard, to Aragorn, a sheath for his sword Anduril, the famed Broken Sword forged anew that no man but he can draw his sword from the scabbard without facing death. To them all she gave Elven cloaks which seemed to reflect in silvery light their natural surroundings. The company set off down the River in light Elven boats. It is revealed that the vile owner of the ring before Bilbo, Gollum, was following the Company. After no sight is seen of Gollum, the Company heads out again. They finally reach the Great Stair near the city of Minas Tirith, the city Boromir is from. They then try to council where they would go next, would they break up? Would they go to Minas Tirith? Or would they go straight to Mordor? While Frodo is away pondering this, Boromir comes and attacks him, overwhelmed by the evil of the Ring. Frodo puts on the Ring and disappears and runs off. Boromir tells Aragorn of Frodo’s disappearance and the company sets out to find him. Sam realizes that Frodo must be back at the camp, taking his gear or a boat and runs back, when Aragorn hears Boromir’s horn sound and fighting and the shouts of Orcs coming from the wood. Sam found Frodo taking a boat and hops in with him and they set out over the water. Aragorn finds Boromir leaned against a tree and nearly dead. Boromir tells Aragorn that Merry and Pippin have been taken by the Orcs and that he had tried to take the Ring by force and upon saying so he dies. Legolas and Gimli appear and Aragorn tells them all that had transpired but that Boromir had tried to take the Ring. The trio took Boromir’s body and lay it on a raft, his weapons and horn they lay with him, and the weapons of his many slain foes at his feet. The book ends after they set Boromir’s body adrift down the River and return to the sight of the Hobbit’s capture. I’d give this book a 7/10 mainly becuase it is a bit slow and the ending is at a bit of an odd place. I would recommend you read it, though, if only to read on to the next one.

The sequel to The Capture in the “Guardians of Ga’Hoole” series, The Journey by Kathryn Lasky. In this sequel, Soren, Gylfie, Twilight, Digger, and the blind nest maid snake Mrs. Plithiver are travelling towards the great Ga’Hoole tree in the middle of the Sea of Hoolemere to warn the Guardians of Ga’Hoole of the dangerous, but incredibly stupid, owls of Saint Ageolius Academy for Orphaned Owls. They have taken an oath to stick together and to find the legendary Guardians their parents told them about before they were snatched away by St. Aggies.
Soren and his friends battle through winds, bobcats, and weather to find the birds who are thought not to exist but in legend. Together, they cross over Tyto, across Ambala, through the Barrens, and into the strange uninhabited area known as the Beaks. The Beaks are filled with rats and voles, and patches of beautiful forests, it does not strike any of them as strange that this wondrous world was uninhabited. The most spectacular part of this amazing land is the Mirror Lakes. The orphans become entranced by the paradise and begin to forget their mission. Only Mrs. Plithiver with her finely tuned sensibilities to the world around her noticed what was going on. She tries to talk to Soren and the others but they won’t listen. Soon they start to forget who they are. Find out what happens to the band next by reading The Capture. I’d give this book a 9.7/10.

Readers, the next book I read was Evil Star, the sequel to Raven’s Gate. Evil Star continues to follow the life of Matt Freeman after his wild adventure in Lesser Malling. He now resides with his journalist friend in York. Matt now goes to a country secondary school. The kids know he is different and avoid him. He does not use his powers until a pack of school bullies trip him and push him over the edge. The Nexus, a secret organization that tried to help him in his last adventure, reveals to him that there is a second gate in Peru. He must decide to stay in York where the people now suspect him, or go to Peru and fight the Old Ones in a battle to end all battles.
When they arrive in Peru, Matt is attacked by a team of strange men. The Nexus realize that there is a leak in the organization handing out information to the evil Old Ones, but who? Matt escapes and finds a boy who guides him to the hotel at which he was supposed to meet the Nexus. Inside, he is brutally attacked by a corrupt Police squad. He escapes and wakes up to find the boy who guided him wearing his watch and holding his money, but his injuries are strangely healed. The boy, named Pedro, takes him to a man named Sebastian in a slums. There, he is given a disguise as a poor Peruvian boy. in his dreams, Matt is on the shore of a lake waiting for a boat to take him to the other four of his kind, when the boat reaches him, Pedro is commandeering it. He is one of the five. Together they must stop the Old Ones from destroying the Earth. Find out how in Evil star. I’d give this book a 8.5/10.

The next book I read was The Capture by Kathryn Lasky. The Capture the first book in the series “The Guardians of Ga’Hoole”. It is based on the life of a young Barn Owl (Tyto Alba) named Soren living with his brother, Kludd, his father, Noctus, his mother, Marilla, and his newborn sister, Eglantine. Also resiiding with them is a blind snake by the name of Mrs. Horace Plithiver. All is going well for this nocturnal family until Soren suddenly falls from the nest. He is then swept up by twin brothers Jatt and Jutt, who take them to St. Ageolius Academy for Orphaned Owls. There he meets Gylfie, an Elf Owl from the Desert of Kuneer. They eventually escape with the help of a Boreal Owl named Grimble. They go to the Forest Kingdom of Ambala where they meet Twighlight, an egocentric Great Grey who was abandoned at birth.
Together they go to the Forest Kingom of Tyto to find Soren’s family. after finding nothing, they move on to the Desert of Kuneer to find Gylfie’s family. During the search, they meet a strange little Burrowing Owl named Digger. He too, was a victim of the St. Aggies patrols. As they watch Digger skitter around the desert in pursuit of his family, Jatt and Jutt suddenly fly down. The friends must save Digger from the fearsome owls now looming over Digger. To find out what happens to the Digger and the others, read The Capture by Kathryn Lasky. I’d give this book a 10/10, just excellent. I would highly recomend this book for anyone from fourth to seventh grade, it is like the animal kingdom version of Harry Potter.

The next book I read was Raven’s Gateby Anthony Horowitz. Anthony Horowitz is famous for his successful series, Alex Rider. This series is about the plight of the orphaned Matthew Freeman (who prefers to be called Matt) whose parents died in a car crash when he was eight and has lived with his careless half-aunt. Matt had always realized that he was different and somehow, everyone he met knew it too. Matt has but one friend, Kelvin Johnson. But it will be Kelvin who ruins what little secluded sanctity that Matt has retained for the last six years.
It all begins with a boy, Matt, and his spoiled, ne’er do well rich friend, Kelvin Johnson. Kelvin gets an idea from his jailbird brother to break into an old, supposedly unguarded, warehouse and steal electronic equipment inside. In a bewildering turn of events, one of the very few guards patrolling the area spots Matt and begins to question him when he is stabbed in the back by Kelvin.
The guard tells the police who arrived on site that Kelvin had stabbed him and not Matt, but he was still an accessory to the crime and is given a choice to go to a Juvenile hall, or turn to the LEAF (Liberty and Education Achieved through Fostering) program for better parenting. Custody of him is given to an old lady named Mrs. Deverill and her terribly deformed farmhand. They live in the small town of Lesser Malling in Yorkshire. On a routine trip to the pharmacist, the townspeople are extremely creepy and disturbed. So is Mrs. Deverill. At first, she was just strict, then creepy, then the painting of one of her ancestors starts moving and strange cloaked figures are walking around the property speaking in some strange language. Something is going on in Lesser Malling, and Matt is the only one who can figure it out, before it’s too late. I’d give this book a 9.7 out of 10.

Readers, I have recently received a new reading challenge. I must now read 1500 pages. I have kicked off this new challenge with an interesting book by Janet Lee Carey called Dragon’s Keep. It is a tale of a girl who is a direct descendant of Arthur Pendragon. Merlin the Wizard had prophesied the birth of the twenty-first Pendragon queen who would rise to once again rule England. The twentieth queen desperately wants her daughter, Rosie, to fulfill said prophecy and reclaim Pendragon rule over England. Only one problem, Rosie’s left fourth finger is the talon of a dragon.
Every Saturday night, they dull the nail with a sharp knife. Rosie has kept the secret by wearing gold gloves and hiding her hands from everyone but her mother. Not even her father knows of her mark. One day, a dragon appears in their small island country and spirits her away. She learns the reason of her bearing such a mark and a terrible secret kept ever since her birth. Find this out and more by reading Dragon’s Keep. I would give this book 9.6 out of 10 stars.

I recently watched a video in class partaining to the volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D 79 after a serious bowel movement deep in the Earth’s crust. This video described what had happened during the 18 hr bombardment onto the towns of Stabiae, Pompeii, Herculanium (now Ercalano), and Naples by pumice, ash, and lava bombs. What surprised me the most about this extreme natural phenomenon was the sheer amount of material launched into the air by Vesuvius. 100 billion metric tonnes of debris rained down onto the Bay of Naples and crushed many homes and buried the towns in pyroclastic flows. Scientists have found mounds of hardened volcanic ash which encased the bodies of those killed in the pyroclastic flows. The scientists pourd plaster into these tombs and can actually look at what these people looked like in their final moments. 1500 bodies have been found and counting. I had already learned of such phenomena as pyroclastic flows and many casualties resulting of this but never in this magnitude for so long. Disturbingly, although there is still a great threat of another eruption like this happening soon, over 700,000 peopole refuse to leave the area. The ruins of Pompeii and Herculanium are disturbing reminders of what is to come next.

My previous post was of the second to last book in the series “The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness” a series I have been following for a while now. I have just finished the final book “Ghost Hunter” in which Torak is hunting the last of the Soul Eaters, a group of seven Mages (including his father) turned evil (except his father). The last and most powerful Soul Eater is Eostra, the Eagle Owl Mage. The book begins in a Raven Clan Camp where a massive blight of moths is terrorizing the Open Forest. Eostra is also calling on the ghost of Toraks’ dead father to convince him to come to her. Wolf and his mate Darkfur and his cubs, Pebble and Shadow, live happily on the bank of the Fastwater River. Renn is worried that Torak will leave camp to hunt Eostra on his own, and he does. To make matters worse, Eostra has stolen dozens of children and turneed them into tokoroths, children with demon souls bent on hunting whomever Eostra pleases. The major external conflict in this book was the coming of Soul’s Night when Eostra was to awaken the six dead Soul Eaters. The tension begins rising from a very high point at the first mention of her intention. The main internal conflict is that of the Wolves, as they are torn apart and separated by many miles. Wolf’s torn emotions between saving his brother Torak and finding his cubs and mate tear at the very core of his sanity, and at the heart of all readers. To find out how the book plays out, then read “Ghost Hunter” by Michelle Paver.

I have, as you know, been reading to reach my Literature teacher’s goal of 1,000 pages. I have read another book by one of my personal favorite authors, Michelle Paver. I have, since second grade, been reading her series, The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. I have recently read the second to last book in that series, “Oath Breaker” Which is set around 6000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age in Northern Europe. Torak, the protagonist finds himself in an odd situation: His father, (affectionally called Fa) was one of the most dangerous people in the entire known world known as the Soul Eaters, he more or less became one of them and was outcast and hunted by all the people in the region,Torak turnes out to be the long fortold Spirit Walker with the power to take control of other animals, after being accepted back into society he is harrassed by the remaining Soul Eaters. This and more are revealed in the rest of the series. In “Oath Breaker”, Torak’s last surviving family member, Bale, is murdered by Thiazzi, the Oak Mage, and is haunted by Bale’s ghost throughout the book. Torak’s animal friend, Wolf the wolf, finally learns that Torak is not a wolf as he had thought for the whole series and runs away. In ”Oath Breaker”, Toraks original group of him, Renn, and Wolf, he has found two new minor characters, Rek is a raven that had befriended the wolves, Torak, and Renn. Along with his girlfriend Rip the raven, they are possibly the most crafty and intelligent animals in the book. They may only appear occasionally throughout the book doing menial things like stealing food or tricking hunters. But sometimes they become leaders and show Torak, Renn, and Wolf the way to food, each other, shelter, or Thiazzi’s lair. They can be slightly manipulative of Wolf by making him disembowel carcasses so they can feed. They are also equivalent to scouts when Torak and Wolf must find their way at night or when the path ahead is unknown. They also serve a purpose in bringing Wolf and his mate Darkfur to Torak and Renn in their moment of greatest need. All in all, they are a pair of little winged helpers to the protagonist and his lot. Most of the book Torak and his girlfriend Renn are being captured and released and captured again. This book is amazingly fast paced and I would argue that “The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness” is the greatest young adult book series written so far.

Lately in Liturature class, we have taken on the challenge to read and document 1000 pages of books. So far I have read two books, “The Dreamwalker’s Child” and the sequel, “The Web of Fire”. “The Dreamwalker’s Child” was about a kid named Sam Palmer with his emotionally distraught parents living in England. He notices that bugs like wasps, horseflys, and mosquitoes. One day as he is riding his bike when a storm of wasps and flies swarm around him and he doesn’t see the delivery truck heading straight at him. He wakes up in an alien world with three moons and strange talking dogs. The two seemingly strangest things of all are that the people fly gigantic insects the size of jets. And he is Public Enemy no. 1 and the most hunted person on both worlds. He is taken to a maximum security prison in the city-state Vermia ,where they are developing a super virus to kill all humans, with a girl named Skipper who is trying to get him out. Their chance comes when they hijack a giant ant and then a giant horsefly to escape. The protagonists then reach the city of Vahlzi where he is trained as a wasp pilot by a semi-insane man named Briggs. He makes friends in two troublemakers named Mump and Zip, and soon they are off to fight the Vermian menace. In the end, he is returned to Earth where his body was in a comatose state for weeks. To learn mor details, go to a local library or school library to get further into this book.
“The Web of Fire
” starts out with a small girl and her frightened family running across a frozen lake. They fall through the ice and suddenly Sam Palmer is on a snowy mountaintop with a mysterious man. The man gives him a coat and tells him to “find the one who is true of heart.” Sam is left in the snow, alone. He finds his old friends, Mump and Zip riding giant fleas through the snow drifts. They tell him that he has been presumed dead for years. Vahlzi had been conquered by the new Robber Fly program in Vermia. The robber fly was the newest, most powerful bug on the planet, greater even than the wasps he had flown. He finds his alien girlfriend Skipper and they set off to find a more powerful bug to beat the robber fly. I do not want to spoil a good book so I will just leave it up to you, the reader. Please pick up one of these great books at a library near you.

In school, we are reading the book “Three Cups of Tea” in Literature. The book is the true story of Greg Mortenson as he sets out to climb K2 and ends up in Korphe, a small village in the Himalayas. Greg realizes that the children in Korphe have no public education system. As he leaves, he promises his friend, Haji Ali, that he would buiild a school. Ali says that building relationships is just as important as a school. I believe that Ali is totally correct. Building relationships is very important, we as humans are social animals, and building a relationship is very important for any problems you may come across in life. When I was a toddler, my mother took me to a pool, my brother Tony and I couldn’t get along, we were wrestling and fighting in the pool, but when it came time to get out, we could not get out of the pool. I realized that we needed to work together to get out, so Tony went on my shoulders and he climbed out, and he pulled me up. Back to “Three Cups of Tea”, Greg went back to America and got supplies and builders for the school. Much to the surprise of the people of Khorphe, Greg came back, but when he told him that they needed a stone bridge so the supplies can get to Khorphe, Greg felt as thoughhe couldn’t keep his promise, he never foresaw the need for a bridge. It’s the same for me with turning in my homework, I made a promise to my parents that I won’t turn in my homework late. I quickly realized I can’t really keep up with the schedule sometimes, I am trying to level that out this year, it is slowly working towards my favor. Greg Mortenson is an in inspirational figure and his deeds in Korphe, Pakistan, and Afghistan will never be forgotten.

Sadly, my 6th grade year will soon come to a close. I am dissapointed that my funnest year went so quickly through my life. I did get a lot of good out of it, though. I learned in science how to create a helthy ecosystem, we tested that with real animals. And I won third place out of 69,000 other people in a Letters About Liturature competition, (I got a plaque) I also helped our school win third place in the Math Bowl competition. That was really hard because I was in the last group and we had the hardest questions. I wrote many things this year, but the last thing I wrote for sixth grade was my best, here is a link to it Mystery. I am really proud of this piece of work, even more proud of it then I was of the poetry I wrote this year. I will try to keep blogging for as long as I have this blog. Thank you to those who have watched me progress through the year. And thank you to my parents for standing behind me for my sixth grade year.

Lately, our class has been engaged in G.A.T.E (Global Awareness Through Exploration) projects. My friend Nikko and I have been helping with the recycling crew at our school. Our “Recycling Queen” has showed us the ropes so now, every Tuesday, we go around our wing and pick up the recycling bins and put the paper into two large bins. If your school doesn’t recycle, you should be the one to say something, put up posters and tell your own family to recycle and reuse things like doggy beds that your dog has grown out of and give it to a shelter. Out communities are always covered in wet trash after winter, so you can help clean up. Just the little things can help to make the world a better place for kids to inherit. Nikko and I are also involved inn helping gather school supplies for schools without enough money to afford them. Our Earth is calling, come along with us and all the others who have taken the first steps to answereing that call. :<)

This year I learned about many things concerning poems. Here is my master poem I wrote for you, the readers, I believe it to be the greatest. This poem uses many different rhymes, feminine rhymes like copper and proper. Also masculine rhymes like fought and not. It has a sort of varied meter when it gets slower in the beginning and faster as it progresses. Here it is ladies and gentlemen, Paul Revere
Special thanks to my English teacher, M. Plantan who taught me everything.

Do you like bone chilling true tales? Or maybe some thrills and a few explosions in between? Then this book might just be for you! This treacherous tale of tremendous proportions is named Hamburger Hill by Samuel Zaffiri. But beware! This book is not for the faint of heart. The exciting battles in Vietnam for the independence of South Vietnam from the cold, icy grip of their North Vietnamese counterparts. Brutal air attacks, thrilling skirmishes the streets and the acrid smell of napalm fill the pages of this exciting book.
The whole battle started as a mission to take a small valley called A Shau just outside of Laos. The operation went bad very quickly; all the air-strikes and artillery barrages not only just dent the defenses of the Viet Cong slightly, they hit the Marines themselves.
